The arctic blast that barreled into southeast Texas early Tuesday morning dropped temperatures from a high of about 52 degrees at midnight, to a frigid 29 degrees by 4 a.m.

The temperatures continued a steady drop throughout the day, never rising above 24 degrees.

To complicate matters, the region experienced light rain before the freezing temperatures arrived, making the roads slick.

More than 400 traffic accidents were reported, and more than 1,o00 flights at Houston Hobby and Bush Intercontinental Airports were cancelled, while nearly 200 were delayed on Tuesday.

The Galleria and The Woodlands Mall closed their doors at 3 p.m. for the sake of safety, and METRO announced that bus service would cease by 5:30 p.m. due to the dangerous road conditions.
