La Porte Church Launches Book Mobile

LA PORTE, TX — Children in La Porte are brushing up on their reading skills and getting a head start to the school year, thanks to the efforts of a local church that transformed an old RV into a book mobile.

Officials with the Fairmont Park Church, which has two campuses in La Porte, had seen an old flat black RV on the side of the road in town.

Most joked that the RV was little more than an eyesore, until one of the church pastors had an idea to buy and transform the old RV into something useful.

Fairmont Senior pastor Dee Spears thought having a book mobile to serve the children in La Porte was a great idea, and sounded the call to his congregation for book donations, which spread to area businesses, according to a Houston Chronicle report.

The community effort resulted in 5,000 book donations for the new book mobile.

The book mobile, which also includes games as well as books, is the first piece in the puzzle that will become the nonprofit Fairmont Park Church is creating, called Loving La Porte.

Feel like reading a good book? The book mobile will be parked in front of the Dewalt Alternative School, 401 N. Second St., from 10-11 a.m. Monday thru Friday until Aug. 11.
