La Porte Police Nab Federal Fugitive After Traffic Accident

Benjamin Cray, who was wanted by the U.S. Marshal Service, was arrested after a minor traffic accident

LA PORTE, TX — A traffic accident in La Porte last week led the the capture of a man who’d been a fugitive and was wanted by the U.S. Marshal Service

Police arrested 39-year old Benjamin Cray after he was involved in a minor traffic accident on Dec. 8.

Cray was wanted ion a federal criminal warrant by the U.S. Marshal Service for human smuggling, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Police said the accident happened in the 11000 block of N. P Avenue , when Cray, and a woman were both walking in the wrong direction down the roadway.

The woman was hit by the mirror of the passing car, and was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

However, Cray fled the area before police arrived at the scene.

He was found by officers a short time later near his home in La Porte, and at first gave officers a fake name and birthdate.

However, police learned his true identity by talking with the injured woman, and that he was wanted on a federal warrant, KIAH reported.

He was charged with failure to identify, a class A Misdemeanor, and is being held in the Harris County Jail on the federal warrant.

The driver of the car was not charged.
