Man Is Killed In Fiery Crash In Channelview

Investigators say man who was trapped in his vehicle was burned to death while trying to free his SUV from a muddy ditch

CHANNELVIEW, TX -- A man was burned to death while he was trying to free his SUV from a muddy ditch.

The incident happened early Monday in the 700 block of Shields Road. (Sign up for Patch’s daily newsletter for your neighborhood.)

Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed in a 1999 Ford Explorer, when he took a turn too fast and ran into a ditch.

Because of the recent heavy rains, the ditch was filled with mud and water.

Investigators said the driver, who was unable to get out of his vehicle, accelerated his SUV to try and free his vehicle from the mud.

Investigators said the continued acceleration caused a mechanical malfunction and the SUV erupted in flames, with the driver trapped inside.

Firefighters arrived and found the SUV

The man was killed, and was so severely burned that authorities haven’t been able to identify him yet.

The Harris County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
