Police said Chaires and his wife formerly lived in Littlefield, Texas, near Lubbock, but that the couple had separated three weeks ago.
Police said that Chaires discovered where his wife was living and and showed up at the apartment.
Witnesses told police that Chaires and his wife talked for several hours about reconciling, but that they began arguing, and that's when Chaires allegedly shot his wife, and fled.
The children, who are all under the age of 13, were not hurt.
Investigators are trying to determine if there was a history of abuse in the family.
