Plano Is Nation's 8th Safest City, Study Finds

PLANO, TX — There is no denying Plano has seen extensive growth and expansion in recent years, but the city certainly doesn't sacrifice safety for progress — at least according to a recent study from WalletHub. In fact, the study found Plano to be the safest city in Texas and the No. 8 safest city in the U.S.

Researchers looked at 35 factors across 180 cities to determine safety. The factors ranged from the obvious — traffic fatalities, terrorism, natural disasters — to the unexpected — job security and fraud. It found Plano to be No. 9 in the nation for Home & Community Safety, No. 24 for Financial Safety and No. 110 for Natural Disaster Risk — presumably because of Plano's position in Tornado Alley.

Many other Texas cities made the list, all with varying degrees of success. Dallas placed 173 overall but 178 for number of uninsured persons per-capita. Brownsville and Corpus Christi were numbers 2 and 3, respectively, for lowest natural disaster risk, and Austin was in first place for employment (meaning the city is home to the lowest percentage of unemployed persons in the nation).

Corpus Christi also boasted the fewest hate crimes per capita while Brownsville nailed down the second-best spot for fewest traffic fatalities.

Other Texas cities that made the list were: Brownsville, 10; Laredo, 26; Corpus Christi, 36; El Paso, 38; Irving, 40; Grand Prairie, 45; Arlington, 73; Lubbock, 92; Amarillo, 100; Fort Worth, 103; San Antonio, 119; Houston, 126; Garland, 134; Austin, 149; Dallas, 164.
