Coronavirus: WilCo Illness Count Crosses 1K Mark, 61 New Cases

Health officials have pointed to a 47 percent increase in active cases in the past week as of Monday, urging residents to take precautions.

AUSTIN, TX β€” The number of cases of the coronavirus in Williamson County crossed the 1,000-mark on Tuesday, rising by 61 new cases for a historical total of 1,021. The fatality count remained unchanged at 30.

Since coronavirus records have been kept by Williamson County and Cities Health District officials on March 18, 598 people have recovered from the respiratory illness. The data are collected in a statistical dashboard that is updated daily by 4:30 p.m.

The city in the county with the most positive cases is Round Rock, with a total of 454 (including 152 open cases), according to the dashboard data. Additionally, 24 deaths and 278 recoveries have been reported in Round Rock. Georgetown is a distant second in terms of cases to date, with 130. Moreover, there have been three deaths and 76 recoveries in the county seat.

In Cedar Park, there have been 108 cases of coronavirus, 62 active, and one death. In neighboring Leander, there have been 71 cases since March 18 and no reported deaths.

A spike in cases in the county prompted health officials to reiterate a list of safeguards seen as the most effective tactics in helping blunt the spread of illness: The wearing of protective fabric coverings, maintaining a six-foot distance with others and maintaining proper hygiene by washing one's hands often while avoiding touching the face and eyes.

In urging caution amid the growing coronavirus reach, health officials pointed to a 47 percent increase in active cases in the past week as of Monday. In addition, health officials noted, the number of total new confirmed cases rose by 27 percent in the same span of time.

Health officials also noted that 50 percent of confirmed cases reported so far in June emerged within the community or via contact with someone having tested positive for the virus. Officials noted 16 percent of that spike was connected to an illness cluster emanating from a long-term care facility or workplace.
