Driver Charged After Hitting Round Rock Officer Directing Traffic
Raul Martinez, 64, charged with intoxication assault after collision with Charles Whites, an 18-year police veteran.

ROUND ROCK, TX — Round Rock police on Monday identified the officer who was injured after being hit by a car while he was directing traffic over the weekend. The driver who hit him also was identified and charged with intoxication assault.
Raul Martinez, 65, was formally charged with the felony offense of intoxication assault after hitting the officer who was directing traffic along I-35 on Sunday. The officer, Charles Whites, remains hospitalized in serious condition, police said.
According to a police advisory, police received a welfare call just before 5:30 a.m. related to a pedestrian walking near I-35. By the time officers arrived at the scene, the pedestrian had been hit and killed in a hit-and-run incident. Whites, an 18-year veteran of the Round Rock Police Department, was directing traffic around the scene of the collision near Palm Valley Boulevard when he was hit about an hour after the original police call.
