'Pipe Bomb,' Bomb-Making Manual Found In Vacant Round Rock Home

Homeowner called after finding materials left behind by renter, prompting evacuations and controlled detonation of explosive device.

ROUND ROCK — Police on Monday gave the all-clear after a device inside a vacant Round Rock home described as a pipe bomb was found not to contain explosives, the sheriff said.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office received a call from a homeowner who was cleaning the house along the 400 block of Hillside Drive after a renter vacated the dwelling. The calle told police ammunition and a manual instructing on how to make bombs was found at the site, Sheriff Robert Chody told reporters.

After finding what appeared to be a pipe bomb and following the reaction of a K9 to a scent, the Asutin Police Department bomb squad was called in to assist, Chody said. Ahead of the team's arrival, residents in the area were evacuated as a precaution, he added.

The device was retrieved by a robot before being detonated, according to Chody. Members of the FBI and ATF (Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) also arrived at the scene to investigate, according to officials.

At a subsequent news conference, Chody said the public was not under any safety threat, and residents were let back into their homes by shortly after 3 p.m.
