PS 35 Pizza Joint In Round Rock Closes After Just 6 Months

Austin chef Clint Elmore and SMGB Hospitality Group opened the restaurant in May and no reasons for its closure were given.

ROUND ROCK, TX — If you get a craving for pizza in Round Rock, you best not head out to PS 35. It's been closed after just six months of operation.

The Austin American-Statesman reported that a "closed" sign now hands on the storefront, this after Austin chef Clint Elmore and SMGB Hospitality Group opened the restaurant in May. And this isn't the first time Elmore's put away the dough: His 40 North pizza trailer offering Neopolitan-style pie closed last summer.

The business is located at 1500 N. Interstate Highway 35.

Despite PS 35's short life, Zagat managed to write a review of the place: "It seems only appropriate that New York-style pies are the attraction at this Round Rock eatery that resembles nothing so much as a clean, modern subway station, complete with dangling globe lights, splashes of legit graffiti and a huge wraparound counter. Classic and creative pizzas - like the Hot Honey - dominate the menu though they're also slinging sandwiches, salads, craft drafts, wine and frozen cocktails."

So what gives? Nobody knows for sure. The Round Rock eatery's PS 35 Facebook page was closed down too, with nary an explanation. The diner's website, PS35pizza.com, also is down. Before the closure, the place served New York-style pizza and sandwiches. A few dozen people were employed there, the Statesman noted.

A glance at Yelp shows generally positive reviews for the disappeared fare:

  • “The hot honey 12" pie was very tasty, just a slight amount of heat and sweet and a crust that was crisp on the bottom and tasty.”
  • “We also have had the Italian Chop salad...so much flavor!”
  • “We started off with garlic knots and they were well loved by the entire table.”

It was just in June that the Statesman sent a scribe to produce a fun little story on comparing the offerings at PS 35 and War Path Pints & Pizza, another recent entrant into the Round Rock Pizza market. After billing the piece as an epic battle of pies — "PS35 .vs. War Path — Which slice was better?" the headline read — the writer demurred on declaring a victor, instead largely (and oddly) focusing on the architectural features of both pizza joints.

Still, it's clear the battle was short-lived. And that's all you knead to know.
