Round Rock Council Poised To Annex 20 More Acres For Housing

ROUND ROCK, TX -- Evidence of the city's growth abounds, as illustrated by increased traffic, school enrollments, housing starts and other indicators.

Come Thursday's council meeting, another bit of evidence illustrating city expansion: An ordinance aimed at land annexation to increase housing stock in an ever-growing city.

The proposed ordinance would have the city annex nearly 20 acres of land located northeast of the intersection of Old Settlers Boulevard and A.W. Grimes Boulevard. The ordinance, if passed, would allow for development of single-family homes.

The area's brisk growth has been widely documented. USA Today recently named the Austin-Round Rock region as the 4th-fastest grwing in the nation, with a five-year population growth of nearly 16 percent as of last year.

"Like many rapidly growing cities in the South and Southwest, Austin has benefited from a burgeoning, high-tech economy," the USA Today study's authors noted. "As many as 14.8% of the region’s population is employed in professional or scientific occupations, more than nearly every U.S. metro region. Austin’s unemployment rate of 3.2% is also one of the lowest in the country."

The Round Rock City Council meeting is scheduled to take place April 14 at council chambers located at 221 E. Main St. It begins at 7 p.m.
