🌱 RRISD Information On Fentanyl Dangers + $7,000 Construction Scam

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Round Rock.

Hello, everyone! Elaine Thompson here, with your issue of the Round Rock Daily, fresh off the presses. Let's get this day started off right, with a quick dive into everything you need to know about what's happening around town. In this issue, you'll find news about:

  • Round Rock school district brings awareness to students and parents about the drug fentanyl
  • Round Rock couple warns of local contractor scamming them out of $7,000
  • The Heritage Trail West project will resume construction in 2023

But first, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and warm. High: 92 Low: 62.

Here are the top stories today in Round Rock:

  1. The Round Rock school district has launched an awareness campaign on the dangers of the drug, fentanyl. Its resources include digital displays throughout the secondary campuses, an informational website, counseling services and an anonymous tip line for students. These efforts come after the news the four Hays school district students are suspected to have died from fentanyl overdoses. No student overdoses related to fentanyl have been reported in Round Rock, but authorities know that the drug is present in student populations. (Subscription/Austin American-Statesman)
  2. Round Rock couple John Newhouse and Claire King paid for contractor David House of Pro Inc. to convert their garage into a livable bedroom for King's elderly mother. After paying, never hearing back from House, and never having construction start, this couple is at a major loss. Newhouse and King filed a police report and a civil lawsuit (and won that judgement), yet have received no payment back from House's felony theft charge lawsuit. Newhouse and King want to help others avoid suffering the same issues in hiring David House of Pro Inc. (KVUE)
  3. Early on Wednesday, Oct. 5, an 18-wheeler knocked down power lines, which caused stopped traffic on US 79 and Mays Street. Since this incident, the situation has been cleared and traffic is back to its usual flow.(KXAN)
  4. The Heritage Trail West project will connect the 1-mile span between Chisholm Trail Road and North Mays Street along Brushy Creek. The originally awarded bidder, Ritter, Botkin Prime Construction Co., completed 20%-25% of the project before filing for bankruptcy. Round Rock officials hope to resume this project in 2023. In addition to the completion of the Heritage Trail West project, artist Antonio Munoz will complete up to 10 bronze statues along the trail by 2026. (Community Impact)

  • Lunchtime Series: Music on Main at Downtown Round Rock (11:30 a.m.)
  • Green Thumbs Up: Gifts from the Garden at Round Rock Public Library (6:30 p.m.)

  • Holy Convocation at A Breathe of Praise Community Church (7 p.m.)

From my notebook:

  • This year's National Night Out served to be more than just an annual community building event between citizens, law enforcement and first responders. This year was emotional and heartfelt as some attendees found themselves tearing up and just being grateful that everyone was able to get together, as the ravages of the March 2022 tornado could have made that a very different story. • Round Rock ISD Partners in Education Foundation sends a very special shout out to all of our Round Rock ISD educators on World Teachers' Day yesterday! Teachers play a big role in children's education every day, as well as shaping the future of our societies. (Facebook)
  • The CHASCO Family YMCA is honoring and celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 😄💪💪 A few things they're doing to make it fun and memorable are: Wearing pink on Friday classes to be entered into a raffle, Les Mills Launch on Oct. 22, and asking breast cancer survivors to share their story, as well as supporting women who are currently battling.
