Round Rock Plant Explosion Injures One, Causes Structural Damage To Building [UPDATED]

Worker of Energetic Materials and Products at 1500 Brandi Lane rushed to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for treatment of burns.

ROUND ROCK, TX — Police urged residents to avoid the area of Sam Bass Road between Woods and Chisholm Trail after an explosion occurred there Friday afternoon.

One person has reportedly been injured in the explosion, city officials said. Emergency crews from the Round Rock Police Department and the Round Rock Fire Department reported to the scene attempting to clear the area following the explosion.

The incident occurred just after 2 p.m. when Round Rock Fire Department units responded to reports of an explosion and fire at Energetic Materials and Products, 1500 Brandi Lane, city officials said in a subsequent advisory. A preliminary investigation revealed that the explosion occurred inside the building as two employees were working inside.

One of those employee suffered serious burns, and was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, which houses a premier burn unit facility for treatment of severe burns. The explosion was powerful enough to cause some structural damage to the building, according to fire officials.

According to the company’s website, Energetic Materials and Products is an industrial and defense energetic material technology developer.

This was the second explosion to occur in the area on the same day. In Pflugerville, city officials warned residents to avoid the area at Wiseman Drive in West Park after reports of a "toxic explosion" there.
