Round Rock Students Indicted For Recording Peer In Bathroom

Round Rock ISD didn't release the accused students' names, but confirmed they made the recording via the Snapchat app.

ROUND ROCK, TX — A grand jury has indicted two McNeil High School students of recording a fellow student in the bathroom before sharing the video on Snapchat, according to a report.

Round Rock ISD district officials have cited privacy laws in not naming the accused students, according to the Austin-American Statesman. The incident dates to November, centered on a male student who was victimized by the recording, according to the report.

The unauthorized recording is said to have been shared on Snapchat, a popular multimedia messaging app. One of the main features of the app is that pictures and messages taken through its use are only available for a brief time before becoming inaccessible. However, the app has evolved since its launch to include so-called "Stories" of 24-hour chronological content and "Discover," designed to allow for ad-supported short-form entertainment.

The indictments and charges the two students face weren't immediately available over the weekend.

District spokeswoman Jenny LaCoste-Caputo told the Statesman the video was posted "very briefly" before it was rendered inaccessible to other app users. She added the incident didn't warrant a school-wide letter alerting other parents of the incident as is sometimes done when certain incidents arise requiring wide parental notification. Instead, "We dealt with the parties involved," LaCoste-Caputo told the newspaper.
