ICYMI: Round Rock I-35 Lanes To Close For Bridge Demolition

Motorists advised of imminent detours at the site along with 10-month closure of Old Settlers Boulevard bridge staring Oct. 26.

ROUND ROCK, TX — The northbound and southbound main lanes of Interstate 35 and FM 3406, commonly known as Old Settlers Boulevard, will close for bridge demolition this weekend, transportation officials said Tuesday.

The Texas Department of Transportation will temporarily close I-35 at FM 3406 Friday and Saturday nights, Oct. 27 and Oct. 28 beginning at 8 p.m., with full main lane closures from 10 p.m. until 10 a.m., for bridge demolition. During the closure, I-35 main lane traffic will be detoured to the north and southbound frontage roads, according to TxDot officials.

Drivers headed east or west on FM 3406 will be detoured at the I-35 crossing to the US 79 and RM 1431 crossings, officials said.

Also beginning on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m., the FM 3406 (Old Settlers Boulevard) bridge over I-35 will close for approximately 10 months for bridge reconstruction and widening, officials said. Starting at 5 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, drivers heading westbound on FM 3406 will detour to the newly constructed U-turn bridge to cross I-35. Drivers on eastbound FM 3406 will detour to the southbound frontage road and use the U-turn at US 79.

Road signs will be installed around the closure site to alert drivers of the closure, and motorists should allow extra time to travel through this area, officials said. TxDOT asks that drivers be patient and remain aware when traveling through the work zone.

TxDot officials said the I-35 at FM 3406 project will improve mobility, safety and connectivity for all modes of transportation along and across I-35. The project includes reconstructing the FM 3406 bridge over I-35, including building new U-turn bridges, improving the north and southbound I-35 frontage roads at FM 3406, and adding new and upgraded bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. Construction of the $12.4 million enhancement project is anticipated to be complete fall 2018, weather permitting. The contractor is Flatiron Constructors, Inc.
