School Officials Confiscate BB Gun From Student's Backpack

Letters being sent to parents warning against bringing air rifles on campus after incident.

ROUND ROCK, TX -- School district officials Wednesday sent letters home to parents reminding them on alerting children not to bring BB guns to class after one was confiscated at Stony Point High School.

“This morning, our administrative team working with the Round Rock Police
Department, discovered a BB gun in a student’s backpack on campus,” Stony Point High School principal Anthony Watson wrote to parents.

“No student or staff member was in danger; however, the possession of a BB gun within 300 feet of school property is a serious violation of the RRISD Student Code of Conduct,”Watson added.

He urged parents to discuss the matter with their children attending district schools.

“Please help us reinforce this message,” he urged. “We ask that you please talk to your child this evening about the importance of reporting any action they may witness that threatens campus security.

“Working together, our staff and students can keep our school safe.”

While it’s not a felony to tote BB guns, students are subject to disciplinary action up to expulsion for bringing them on campus. Watson didn’t go into detail as to what punishment may have been meted out to the BB-gun-carrying student, but said action was taken.

“Appropriate and immediate disciplinary actions have been taken,” he wrote.

At nearby Austin ISD, six such guns were confiscated at various campuses lat year. There were no such cases reported by Round Rock ISD officials during the same period.
