Williamson County Runs Out Of Marriage Licenses Due To Ordering Snafu

Somehow, the supplier never got the longstanding order. But those needing licenses can get them at Travis County just a short drive away.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, TX -- If you're getting hitched and need a marriage license, you're out of luck: Williamson County is plumb out of them.

According to a report in the Austin American-Statesman, the county clerk's office in Georgetown ran out of the forms in late August and won't have new ones until Sept. 22. But don't despair, lovebirds: A license can be obtained in any other county.

"There was miscommunication," county spokeswoman Connie Watson told the paper, explaining that it was believed an order was placed with the usual vendor, who said they never got it.

Although she declined to estimate how many couples have been turned away since they ran out of the $72 licenses, it's likely some were given the usual brisk pace of business. Watson told the newspaper issued 300 licenses in July and 1,909 marriage licenses since the beginning of the year through Aug. 26.

Travis County chief clerk Ron Morgan told the Statesman his office has never run out of marriage licenses. He noted his Williamson County counterparts are partial to a specialized paper that gives their licenses and antique feel and look.

Morgan said they are happy to help couples from Williamson County obtain licenses. The Travis clerk's office is at 5501 Airport Blvd., and it's open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Now, they're a little more expensive in Travis County at $81 -- which is $9 more than in Williamson County. But at least they're there.
