Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:
- Many San Antonians are experiencing allergy-like symptoms most likely due to Saharan Dust, "which travels in the atmosphere all the way from Africa," and is more prevalent from July to September. According to Dr. Christine Criscuolo Higgins from Christus Health, "they very well might be" allergies. However, "you should also consider it could be a viral infection and getting yourself tested and wearing a mask around anybody who would be suspectable." To avoid symptoms, you should stay indoors, change air filters often and wash bedding weekly. And if you have symptoms, "use over the counter eyedrops or nasal saline" for relief. (FOX 29)
- On Sunday, Aug. 7, Spurs Give and other organizations, will hold an "inaugural back-to-school event" from noon-4 p.m. at the AT&T Center, located at 1 AT&T Center Parkway. Dr. Kara Allen, chief impact officer for Spurs Sports & Entertainment, said, "By bringing together all of these incredible organizations, we are hoping to best serve the families and students preparing for the school year by providing all the resources they need in one convenient place." Students and families will be provided with free resources such as "vaccines, school supplies, health screenings, and vision checks." Also, "free Spurs swag will be handed out while supplies last," and you can sign up for a drawing here to "win official San Antonio Spurs prizes." (mySA)
- Tony Fuentes, executive director of the San Antonio Coalition for Veterans and Families, is a veteran himself. During the Vietnam war, he "tended to injured and dying comrades in the battlefields of Vietnam." He said, "As a combat medic in Vietnam, when somebody got injured, the medic was the first guy that they called." However, he also "dealt with the struggles of alcohol and drug addiction." Fortunately, he overcame that, and now he "shines a light on the veteran community in San Antonio through his extensive work with the nonprofit coalition." - In San Antonio, "algae blooms are increasingly becoming a problem" due to the continuous drought. Shaun Donovan from the San Antonio River Authority said, "We've seen a lot of algae in the King Williams stretch. A little bit south of the proper Riverwalk. At the Riverwalk, you don't see it as much because there's a lot of boat traffic. So that agitation of the water will take the algae off the surface of the water." He suggests that those that want "to use the San Antonio River for recreation purposes" go to areas of "moving water or big bodies of water" as that is "where algae blooms are less likely, and the river water is cleaner." More details at: (FOX 29)
- According to Chief William McManus from the San Antonio Police Department, "officers received a call that a man shot up his girlfriend's car" on Thursday, Aug. 4, on the Southwest side part of town. The suspect in the incident which "started after 11:30 p.m." is an 18-year-old teen, and he is currently "in critical condition following a shooting with San Antonio police officers" that night.
