Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- The Salvation Army is looking for bell ringers for its largest fundraiser, the Red Kettle Campaign, which "helps raise money for those who need it most." There are more than 100 paid and volunteer positions available, but unfortunately "Kettle coordinators said they are struggling to not only fill volunteer spots, but paid positions as well." Major Stephanie Sills said, "During periods when a bell is silent, a kettle cannot raise any money." To volunteer, click here and then click on the "Register to Ring" tab. - Six honorees were recognized at the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce 2021 Tribute To Women Business Leaders Awards Luncheon, held on Monday, Nov. 15 at the Witte Museum's Mays Family Center. Their achievements were recognized, and "the work and influence their careers have had on the Alamo City" were celebrated. "Each honoree was accompanied by a video of their story, with testimony from their colleagues and friends." Among those present were County Judge Nelson Wolff and former CPS CEO Paula Gold-Williams, as well as the honorees' guests, colleagues, and fellow Chamber members. - Despite the cold winter month of December, things will be "Flamin' hot" at Feliz Modern, set to open on Saturday, Dec. 4. Owner Ginger Diaz said, "everything from hot Cheetos-inspired snacks, drinks, and Cheetos-themed merch from local artists will be available to get your Cheetos dust-crusted fingers on." - On Friday, Nov. 26, VIA Metropolitan Transit will be offering free bus rides to and from the Travis Park's H-E-B tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. The event will feature a Christmas tree, approximately 50-feet tall, that will be lit with more than 10,000 lights. The bus ride "offer includes all VIA mainline bus service and registered VIAtrans riders." All riders have to do to ride for free is say that they will be attending the tree lighting ceremony. - Beginning this month, the Magik Theatre will present "Ella Enchanted: The Musical," from Nov. 19 to Dec. 24. The two-act production will feature music by Deborah Wicks La Puma. The play is about Ella of Frell, who is "given the 'gift' of obedience by her misguided fairy godmother" but who "chooses to reject her fate and embarks on a quest to break the curse forever" through her many adventures. The musical "emphasizes the importance of self-empowerment, perseverance in the face of insurmountable obstacles and an eagerness to learn." The show, approximately 75 minutes long, is recommended for ages 5 and above and includes an intermission and a five-minute question-and-answer session.
