City to light Tower of the Americas, other buildings in gold and crimson to honor George Floyd

The City of San Antonio will join other cities around the nation in lighting numerous buildings with gold and crimson this evening starting at 8:15 p.m. in honor of George Floyd, the night before his memorial and funeral.

The top level of the Tower of the Americas, the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, the Frost Bank Tower, the marquee on the Alamodome and the Consolidated Rental Car facility at the San Antonio International Airport will be illuminated with the colors representing Houston’s Jack Yates High School, where Floyd graduated.

“We are happy to be part of this effort organized by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the African American Mayors Association,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who added that Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner personally requested that San Antonio join in recognizing Floyd.

Floyd’s death while in custody of the Minneapolis, Minn. police has sparked demonstrations around the nation, protesting systemic racism, police use of force and the mistreatment of African Americans.

The City of San Antonio is committed to addressing racism and advancing equity.
