SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 9, 2020) – The City of San Antonio’s Department of Arts & Culture has partnered with the Diez y Seis de Septiembre Commission to announce the commission’s annual celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which will take place virtually this year. Fiestas Patrias San Antonio will feature a series of online and televised events honoring San Antonio’s strong connection to Mexico. Streamed events will be available free for the community via the Department of Arts & Culture website, YouTube channel and TVSA.

“In San Antonio, we look forward to the annual celebration of Diez y Seis and Hispanic Heritage Month as an opportunity to explore the history and culture of our unique city,” said District 1 Councilman and Honorary Diez y Seis Commission Chair Roberto C. Treviño. “Although we can’t gather in person this year, the Fiestas Patrias San Antonio programming will allow us to commemorate the occasion by bringing these meaningful traditions into our homes.”

“Fiestas Patrias San Antonio community partners include the Consulate General of Mexico in San Antonio, LULAC, the San Antonio Charro Association, the Avenida Guadalupe Association, Mariachi Festival and Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Planned events include filmed versions of El Grito San Antonio, the Avenida Guadalupe Diez y Seis Parade, a charreada, the annual Mariachi Festival and Vida Mi Cultura, an educational performance featuring the Guadalupe Dance Company, as well as a variety of video content contributed by the local arts and culture community. “Thanks to San Antonio’s strong ties to Mexico, the city’s longstanding Diez y Seis de Septiembre celebrations have been among the most prominent in the United States for more than 25 years,” said Consul General of Mexico Rubén Minutti Zanatta. “This year, we will observe Mexican Independence Day and Hispanic Heritage Month in a different way, while continuing to focus on the shared culture, friendship and solidarity that bind San Antonio and Mexico.”

The City of San Antonio Diez y Seis de Septiembre Commission was established in 1994. Through its vision and leadership, the Commission hosts cultural events, children and senior citizen programs, and educational endeavors that take place throughout the city as part of the official annual commemoration in San Antonio. Each event is created to promote an understanding of the historical significance of Mexico’s Day of Independence.
