SAN ANTONIO (December 14, 2020) – The City’s Solid Waste Management Department experiences higher volumes of trash, recycling and organics collection each holiday season. The tips below offer guidance to residents for what is recyclable.
- Cardboard boxes from online shipping orders are recyclable but it is important to flatten them and not over-stuff or over-fill the carts. The Styrofoam packaging, packing peanuts and bubble wrap are NOT recyclable. That material goes in the trash cart.
- Clean, plain paper (wrapping, cards, mail) is accepted in the blue recycling cart. Paper that has glitter, foil or a coating is NOT recyclable.
- Clean narrow-mouth plastic bottles and jars are accepted in the recycling program. Other hard plastics such as toys, storage containers, etc. are NOT accepted in the recycling program.
- Strings of lights, cords, wires, hoses, ribbon and string are NOT accepted in the recycling program. These can cause problems in the recycling machinery.
- All electronics should be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Centers. https://www.sanantonio.gov/swmd/HHW
- Flowers and decorative plants are accepted in the green organics cart ONLY if the pots or containers are removed. No plastic, glass or pottery is accepted in the green cart.
- Live Christmas trees can go into the green organics cart but ONLY if they can be broken down so that the lid can close completely. Otherwise, they can go to a Brush Drop-Off Center. https://www.sanantonio.gov/swmd/Brush/Brush-Recycling-Centers Live wreaths and garlands CANNOT go into the green organics cart. They are constructed with wire.
