SAN ANTONIO β The City of San Antonio has proposed a plan to continue protection of the Edwardβs Aquifer, to be managed by itβs existing Municipal Facilities Corporation. The current authorization of $100 million dedicated for aquifer protection is anticipated to be reached in April 2021. After identifying and securing agreements for protecting properties, existing funds may not be fully spent until the end of Fiscal Year 2022. The current goal is to have a seamless transition from 2015 sales tax funding of the Aquifer Protection to the corporation in FY 2023. General fund dollars could be used to secure financing with an expectation of a commitment of at least $100 million from the city over a 10-year period, possibly to be spent even sooner.

βEnsuring the Edwardβs Aquifer is protected is a critical component to the health of our residents and the vibrancy of our local economy. Despite the need to handle other major issues that have come with the Coronavirus pandemic, I believe we have achieved a significant milestone. I feel very confident, and want to ensure our community, that this is a solid plan that will continue to protect the aquifer today and for years to come. As always, I believe itβs your decision. Talk to your Councilmember and tell them your thoughts on this program.β -Councilman John Courage, District 9.
