Councilman Courage Supportive Of The San Antonio City’s Proposal To Continue Protection Of The Edwards Aquifer

SAN ANTONIO — The City of San Antonio has proposed a plan to continue protection of the Edward’s Aquifer, to be managed by it’s existing Municipal Facilities Corporation. The current authorization of $100 million dedicated for aquifer protection is anticipated to be reached in April 2021. After identifying and securing agreements for protecting properties, existing funds may not be fully spent until the end of Fiscal Year 2022. The current goal is to have a seamless transition from 2015 sales tax funding of the Aquifer Protection to the corporation in FY 2023. General fund dollars could be used to secure financing with an expectation of a commitment of at least $100 million from the city over a 10-year period, possibly to be spent even sooner.
