SAN ANTONIO (March 18, 2021) — Today, District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran and District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales commended the passage of the Gender Pay Parity Resolution which reaffirms the City’s commitment to support gender pay parity and strengthens initiatives to close the gender wage gap in San Antonio.

“This passage is a commitment to change – and we are here for it. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it is our duty to continue to look further into the unequal opportunities for women at all points – from education, to training, and to their career choices,” stated Councilwoman Viagran. “I, along with my Council colleague, have worked for years to bring the awareness and the assistance that women have needed to the forefront and I am proud to see this resolution is finally moving forward.”

All six San Antonio City Councilwomen, led by Gonzales and Viagran, along with the YWCA have been working to assess the need of equal pay in San Antonio. The signing of this resolution launches the YWCA San Antonio awareness campaign that will reach out to local businesses to ask them to sign a pledge for pay equity. Inspired by the work of the councilwomen, a group of San Antonio women leaders will be kicking off a red purse pay equity campaign entitled #EqualPaySA.

"Pay parity will be transformational for San Antonio. It's something I've been working on since I first came to the City Council 8 years ago. And it goes well beyond paying women their equal worth. Pay parity will change our quality of life in positive ways because when women thrive families thrive, and when families thrive so do children and communities. We know that women will use their income in ways that directly benefit businesses and the community, so we can't wait any longer to provide women with the overdue support they need,” stated Councilwoman Gonzales.
