Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:
- Día de los Muertos events in San Antonio begin this weekend, on Saturday, Oct. 23 until Tuesday, Nov. 2, and there will be many events to honor those who have died. "Whether with public altars, art, food, a river parade or live music," there will be plenty of ways to celebrate departed loved ones on Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) this year. - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), along with the Tony Gonzalez Foundation and the Alamo Colleges, provides mentor services for San Antonio students to succeed in college. Sonya De La Garza-Walker, education chair for San Antonio district's LULAC, said that "although the program is geared toward helping Hispanic and Latino students, every high school student in San Antonio is welcome to take advantage." The program, which helps with scholarships and learning skills, is helping many students find their way. Program mentor Fritzi Davis said, "We are able to help shape them and cultivate them and get these high school students ready for the real working world as well as a college environment." - Something sweet is coming soon to San Antonio! The city is preparing for its 2021 Concha Throwdown on Saturday, Nov. 13 at Rolling Oaks Mall! "Organized by Que Retro Arts," the event celebrates the traditional Mexican Concha pastry, and features the best local vendors and concha-makers in town. There will also be concha-tasting from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., with judging soon after. "Each baker submitting a concha to the contest will also have pan dulce for sale" and people will be able to shop for the delicious pastry at the "concha mercado." Get your sweet tooth ready and mark your calendar for this super sweet event! (Laredo Morning Times)
- The new San Antonio Monopoly game, which was unveiled on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at the Menger Hotel by Mr. Monopoly himself, includes about 24 iconic San Antonio locations and businesses. Top Trumps USA Inc. was able to include the local landmarks " with the help of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and thousands of local submissions" from the community. The Utah-based Black Rifle Coffee Company, a local business who made the board, also helped to sponsor the game. (mySA)
- If you're in a mood for a juicy steak or some delicious seafood, Up Scale, the new Southtown restaurant is ready to showcase steaks, seafood, and style." Owners Houston and Emily Carpenter invite the public to the grand opening of Up Scale, located at 1024 S. Alamo St., on Thursday, Oct. 21. Reservations are required and can be done online here.
