Hey, people of San Antonio! Gabriela Couvillion here with a fresh issue of the San Antonio Daily.
First, today's weather:
Very warm; breezy in the p.m. High: 89 Low: 63.
Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:
- San Antonio city leaders gathered on Monday, Oct. 25 at a Domestic Violence Awareness event to remember lives lost and to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence. "City leaders cited statistics from the Texas Council on Family Violence," which unfortunately showed that domestic violence is very high in Bexar County. On Oct. 28-29, "city leaders will share information about this year's Collaborative Commission on Domestic Violence Symposium." If you're experiencing domestic abuse, call the San Antonio Domestic Violence Hotline at 210-207-1878, Family Violence Prevention Services 24/7 Hotline at 210-733-8810 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233). (KSAT San Antonio)
- Local fishermen are having some "reel fun" fishing at the world-famous San Antonio River Walk. "Bass, catfish, crappie and bluegill are just some of the fish being caught in the San Antonio River both north and south of downtown." KSAT spoke with San Antonio River Authority (SARA) representatives regarding the best and safest practices on urban fishing, and Mike Gramley from SARA suggested some areas. "Davis Lake, a wide spot in the SA river formed by Espada dam on the Mission Reach of the river," has "picnic tables, trails and riverside docks tailormade for fishing." Another spot "is just north of downtown along the river's Museum Reach. Wherever they go, fishermen are encouraged to look for safe spots and are reminded to have a valid fishing license, be courteous and clean up their area after fishing." (KSAT San Antonio)
- Artist Daniela Oliver de Portillo embraces the city's American and Mexican culture and said "there is no more perfect city than San Antonio for a native Mexican to truly settle into the U.S." Originally from Mexico City, she came to the U.S. with her family in 2003, and was immediately "surrounded by familiar sights and sounds." She felt like she was back home in Mexico, although she was in San Antonio, because of the city's large Hispanic community. The city is filled with food, goods, entertainment and art from the Mexican culture. For example, the artist said, "The Central Library was designed by famed Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, the Antorcha de la Amistad (Torch of Friendship) sculpture is by Mexican artist Sebastián and the McNay Art Museum (where I worked for nearly a decade) has a vast collection of Mexican modernist prints and drawings." San Antonio is a proud city of cultures! (San Antonio Magazine)
- Ming's restaurant, located on 914 E Elmira St., is having a double celebration on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 6 p.m. to midnight! Not only is it Halloween, but they're celebrating their first year anniversary with a fun Halloween-themed party! There will also be "music from local DJs, raffles and surprise dishes" and guests can come dress in Halloween costumes!
