Good morning, neighbors! Gabriela Couvillion here with the latest issue of the San Antonio Daily.
First, today's weather:
Mostly sunny and nice. High: 77 Low: 50.
Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:
- Now that cool fall weather is here, fall foliage is on the way, which means it's time to see the leaves turn in South Texas. Normally leaves are green in spring and summer due to chlorophyll, which "allows plants to absorb sunlight and convert it to usable energy." As temperatures drop in fall and days become shorter, "the diminishing amount of sunlight causes the ample amount of chlorophyll stored within the leaves to break down." As that happens, its green color fades and their "underlying pigments, like yellows and reds, become more visible." That's what it means to "see the leaves turn." A perfect place to experience this natural phenomenon is at Lost Maples State Natural Area in Vanderpool, Texas. For more details on this beautiful experience, please visit: (KENS5.com)
- Opening up vintage shops and purchasing old Spurs shirts seems to be a new trend among San Antonio's 20-something crowd. "As elder millennials and younger Gen-Z wade through an increasingly unstable workforce in a COVID-afflicted landscape, many are taking ownership over their income through the resale of vintage clothing. While this is an observable national trend, a major local cash cow for burgeoning local T-shirt businessmen is ultimately unsurprising: '90s Spurs T-shirts." Two such entrepreneurs are Nathaniel Ruiz, 24, and 23-year-old brother, Bryan. The siblings opened up their shop Worn Out in October 2020, thus turning "their love of collecting and casually selling '90s vintage into a viable livelihood during the COVID-19 pandemic." Two other brothers with a similar story are Jarod Ramos, 27, and Joshua Ramos, 22, who also found themselves reselling '90s vintage full-time as a direct result of the pandemic. After Jared lost his job as a bartender, he opened up House of Trends. "Vintage resale is proving to be a feasible job alternative for local young people that aspire to be their own boss and pursue items of interest." - On Wednesday, Nov. 10, Brooks celebrated the "completion of $2 million project that connects the Greenline Park in the mixed-use community to the Mission Reach and River Walk." The new Greenline Extension will allow South Side residents "more opportunities to enjoy San Antonio's attractions" and "experience the Mission Reach along the River walk," said Brooks Chief Strategy Officer Connie Gonzalez. "This project is in partnership with Bexar County and the San Antonio River Authority." For more details, visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
- In honor of World Diabetes Day, the Frost Tower lights in downtown San Antonio will stay blue this weekend. On Friday, Nov. 12, a lighting ceremony will be held at 5:15 p.m. near the base of the Frost Tower, in the 100 block of W. Houston Street and the lights will stay blue until Sunday, Nov. 14. The event is being held "in support of JDRF, a nonprofit organization that researches Type 1 diabetes and aims at finding a cure." For more information, click here and visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
- 1902 Nightclub on 1174 E. Commerce St. will kick off with a grand opening on Friday, Nov. 19. The new club located in the former Sunset Station Train Depot, now known as the Espee, named after the year the train station opened. The venue features "a formal cocktail atmosphere with high-energy house music." General Manager Victor Valenzuela said, "1902 Nightclub is a labor of love for myself and our partners." He adds, "the atmosphere, drinks and service will rival any nightclub in any city around the world." The cover charge at the door will be $15 and a strict dress code of cocktail attire for women and business attire for men will be required. Shorts, sandals, hats, sweat pants, and workout clothes will NOT be allowed. For more details, please visit: (mySA)
