Fishing For Red Drum Fish + Alamo Long Barrack + Holiday Events

The San Antonio Daily is the quickest way to get caught up on what's going down around town today.

Hey, neighbors! Gabriela Couvillion here with the Tuesday copy of the San Antonio Daily.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and very warm. High: 83 Low: 58.

Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. "Grab your reels! It's time to go fishing!" Officials with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), with the help of the TPWD Neighborhood Fishin' Program, the A.E. Wood State Fish Hatchery staff and the Perry R. Bass Marine Fisheries Center, recently stocked the Calaveras Lake and the Braunig Lake with approximately 1 million red drum fish. The fish can grow 20-40 inches long in a couple of years, but they don't reproduce in freshwater, so the annual red drum stocking helps keep the population high. All those fishing can keep 1 to 3 fish over 20 inches and no tags are needed. "In Texas, children under 17 fish for free, but a fishing license with a freshwater fishing endorsement is required for adults in the family." For more details, please visit: (mySanAntonio.com)
  2. After 2 years, the Alamo Long Barrack is open again to visitors, but you won't believe what teams discovered during the time it was closed. Kristi Nichols, director of Archaeology Collections and Historical Research said "We have found that there is a geological formation about five feet below the ground, which is not quite bedrock, but it's hard. We call it hard pan. And so that means that the foundations of this building are actually sitting on top of a stable surface, so that's been great for the preservation team to understand that we have a stable surface." They also discovered that the Long Barrack walls were decorated at one time, as they found pieces of painted plaster. During the excavation, "the team used state of the art technology," such as thermal imaging and infrared photography. To see a video of the archeologists and their work, and for programs and new holiday exhibits, visit the Long Barrack for free during regular hours. For more details, visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
  3. The holidays are coming, which means it's time to gather with family and friends to give thanks and to enjoy the many wonders of the holiday season. Holiday happenings abound in the San Antonio area, such as Thanksgiving and holiday dinner events, holiday parades and Christmas light shows, and there are many places around the city where you can celebrate with loved ones.
