Here's the latest edition the San Antonio Daily, your source for updates on all things San Antonio.
Happy Friday, San Antonio! Here's everything you need to know going on in town today.
First, today's weather:
Plenty of sunshine. High: 92 Low: 61.
Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:
- The Food Network hosted "a series of culturally relevant cooking demonstrations and online recipes" straight from the heart of San Antonio's Westside. The show, filmed at Jaime's Place, featured recipes for 'Día de los Muertos' (Day of the Dead), "an Indigenous ceremonial event revered in Mexican families." Joaquin Abrego, community health worker and food educator, and local artist Keli Rosa Cabunoc Romero shared a 'barrio pozole' recipe, which Abrego refers to as a "remix" for pozole, as it contains mushrooms instead of pork. Maricela Olguin, owner of Sweet Chela's, showed how she made her hot 'Chocolate Mexicano' (Mexican Chocolate) "passed down from her great grandmother" and which she "served straight from her great grandma's 'jarro' (jar)." The show included "heavy amounts of San Antonio's Westside and family tradition" and, according to Olguin, "was reflective of what a true 'Día de Muertos' gathering would be like." (mySA)
- Jose Villalobos, a "San Antonio artist whose multimedia work often protests the 'toxicity of machismo' from a queer Latinx perspective" will be debuting his new, one-time-only performance, at the 2021 Texas Biennial. Titled 'United States Customs of Oppression,' the piece expands on the following, which he wrote: "The truth is that / We fight and we fight / But the white man is always right / But I refuse to give up this light / That I carry inside / I will shift and I'll grow / Like the desert in sight / My brown skin will interrupt your land like the sharp rusted blades of the border wall / I will stand tall even when I fall." The free event will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 12 from 6-6:30 p.m. at the San Antonio Museum of Art (West Courtyard), located at 200 W. Jones Ave. (San Antonio Current)
- Something new and pet-friendly is brewing on the Northside of San Antonio! Camp 1604, a large camp-themed beer garden, will be opening in the next few weeks. The place will be surrounded by shady oak trees and art installations, and there will be adult teeter-totters, outdoor ping-pong and foosball tables. Visitors will sit on picnic tables, camping chairs and swing chairs, and will be able to enjoy a full bar and local craft beers." Dogs will be able to join in the fun, as they will be allowed in the patio area. Although an exact opening date has not been set, it's expected to open in late October or early November. - Open enrollment is coming up soon, which means, it's time to start thinking of medical insurance plans. There are more than 300 programs available for those on Medicare, but if you're not sure which one to select, Connie Heath organization can help you. The local service, "founded by local community members who ran into their own problems while researching and selecting a plan," helps San Antonio seniors during enrollment period at no cost and "there is no obligation to buy your plan through the service." - Now that the weekend is finally here, it's time for some Friday fun! The three-day San Antonio Fall Home & Garden Show opens today at the Alamodome. The co-host of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Darren Keefe, will be there and there will be plenty of opportunities to connect with industry experts. Tonight Texas music legend Willie Nelson will be performing live at New Braunfels' Whitewater Amphitheater, along with special guest Pat Green. Nelson will sing songs from his latest release, That's Life, "which is his 71st album and his second tribute to the music of Frank Sinatra."
