Harmony Science Academy-San Antonio Junior Named Texas Student Hero

Harmony Science Academy-San Antonio junior Lynda Guzman has been named one of the Texas State Board of Education’s 2026 Student Heroes, a statewide honor recognizing Texas public school students who demonstrate exceptional character, kindness and service to others.

The State Board of Education selected 15 students for this year’s recognition. The honorees were recognized for acts of compassion, leadership and service, including supporting students with disabilities, mentoring younger students and launching nonprofits focused on mental health and wellness.

“The 2026 Student Heroes remind us that leadership begins with a willingness to serve others,” SBOE Chairman Aaron Kinsey said. “These outstanding students are making a lasting difference in their schools and communities through selfless service, and the State Board of Education is proud to recognize their extraordinary example for all Texans.”

Guzman, who represents District 3, volunteers with Compass Connections, where she supports 52 young girls as a mentor, tutor and advocate.

“The Student Heroes Award is a great honor to me because it recognizes leadership, character and service to others — not just academic achievement,” Guzman said. “It encourages me to always look for opportunities to be of value to my community.”

In addition to being named a Student Heroes Award recipient, Guzman is also a National Merit Scholarship recipient, an achievement that places her among the nation’s top-performing students.

“Harmony has allowed me to show leadership in many different ways,” Guzman said. “Since it is a relatively small school, I know almost everyone by name, and it is easier to communicate with them, understand their needs and be a good and adaptable leader.”

Harmony Science Academy-San Antonio school counselor Belinda Sanchez said Guzman’s accomplishments reflect both academic excellence and a strong commitment to others.

“Lynda is a student who is always willing to help others around our campus and in her community,” Sanchez said. “She balances academic excellence with a genuine commitment to serving others.”

Guzman plans to continue her education and build a career focused on creating positive change.

The State Board of Education adopted a resolution honoring the 2026 Student Heroes during its June general meeting. Harmony Science Academy-San Antonio congratulates Guzman on this outstanding achievement and celebrates the leadership, compassion and service she continues to show in her school and community.

Harmony Public Schools is a Texas-born, Texas-wide public charter school system employing roughly 4,000 school professionals statewide. Harmony’s South Texas District offers 9 campuses serving PreK-Grade 12 students in eight South Texas cities, including San Antonio, Laredo, and Brownsville. The school’s curriculum places a heavy focus on STEM skills, character education, project-based learning, and college readiness.
