Welcome to the San Antonio Daily! Here's your five-minute guide to all things going on in San Antonio.

Good morning, neighbors! Gabriela Couvillion here with your brand-new issue of the San Antonio Daily.

First, today's weather:

Breezy with a thunderstorm. High: 93 Low: 73.

Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:

  1. "Daniel Cano is the owner and operator of Hero's Haven, a property investment that works with nonprofits to help get veterans off the streets and in a home." He got the idea of starting his business from a friend in the real estate industry, and actually quit his job with the Department of Defense to follow his dream. A veteran himself, he considers it a privilege to have served his country in the U.S. Air Force and says it has given him so much, and that's why he wants to give back. He hopes that homeless vets will see this as "a stepping stone for them to get somewhere else" and "possibly helping other vets" themselves when they leave. Daniel Cano, thank you for your service! (KSAT San Antonio)
  2. Keli Rosa Cabunoc Romero, professor of Mexican American studies at Northwest Vista College, hosts a 5-episode Food Network series titled "The Día de los Muertos Menu." In the show, she talks about how people "honor their departed loved ones with food" and shares authentic indigenous recipes, along with local chefs. One of them is "San Antonio food educator Joaquin Muerte Abrego," who prepares "pozole verde, which he makes to honor his grandparents." Others are baker Maricela Olguin, and Malena Gonzalez-Cid who is executive director of Centro Cultural Aztlan. Taped at Jaime's Place on the West Side, the show also features guests Jaime Macias and his wife Dorothy, owners of the West Side bar. Enjoy the 5-part series every Wednesday, starting this Wednesday, Oct. 13 on the Food Network cable channel's website and social media accounts. To access the show, visit: (San Antonio Current)
  3. What are those big red machines you see "at your favorite spots around the city?" They're actually called Yelp Texas Trending Machines and they're popping up all over San Antonio! Filled with cool local products and tasty goodies, they're not only free, but they support local businesses! Clarke Finney of Great Day SA talks with the owner of Honcho's Churros, where one of the Trending Machines is located, and finds out more about this exciting new trend. Experience it for yourself at Honcho's Churros, located at 6421 Broadway St. open daily, 10 a.m.-noon and closed Tuesday, but hurry because the Trending Machines will only be here until Oct. 12! (KENS5.com)
  4. Last year was not the best year for San Antonio Spurs shooters. "They were 20th in overall field goal percentage (46.2) and 24th in 3-point percentage (35.0), leading to a rank of 20th in the NBA in points per game at 111.1," but fortunately they seem to have improved this summer. Josh Paredes of Air Alamo ranks the five best pure shooters that will hopefully help bring those numbers up again. They are Bryn Forbes, Doug McDermott, Derrick White, Joe Wieskamp and Devin Vassell. Visit the following to read all about them and Go Spurs Go! (Air Alamo)
