Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- "The first-ever Lawtina Network Summit" hosted by St. Mary's University this past weekend offered "Latina law professionals" an opportunity "to support each other through professional development." According to Brianna Chapa, event organizer, "nearly 150 women attended, and she hopes the connections made today will carry Latinas through their careers." St. Mary's University plans to host the next event again, and hopefully next year scholarships will be offered "to help women pay for their Barr exam." For future updates, please contact the university and visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
- Two San Antonio bookstores recently made the "top 25 local bookstores in Texas" list on Yelp. The company chose the top bookstores after "identifying businesses in the bookstores category and then ranking them using 'a number of factors,' such as total volume and ratings of reviews." The two local stores are the Twig Book Shop at 306 Pearl Parkway, which ranked No. 21 and Nine Lives Books, located at 7959 Fredericksburg Road, Suite 119, which was No. 24 on the list. - "Cosplay, cars and fun," Oh, my! Local cosplayers and fans enjoyed all that and more during this weekend's Thomas J. Henry Superhero Car Show & Comic Con event, held at The Freeman Coliseum Expo Hall, at 3201 E. Houston Street. Event participants included celebrities such as "Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian) and Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi)." In addition, "famous TV and movie vehicles" were on display, "such as the Back to the Future DeLorean time machine and the Scooby Doo van." For pictures of this year's event, please visit: (San Antonio Current)
- This November, Garcia's Tex-Mex Restaurant, located at 842 Fredericksburg Road, "will celebrate its 60th anniversary...with a special cook out with music and commemorative shirts." The eatery owned by brothers Andrew and John Garcia was first opened in 1962 by their parents, Julio and Yolanda Garcia. The siblings "took over the reins after their father suffered a stroke in 2002." Their menu features items such as "carne guisada tacos, huevos rancheros, chilaquiles and enchiladas." They're open Mon.-Sat., from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and are closed on Sundays. For more on the history of the restaurant, please visit: (mySA)
- This weekend, a driver was killed on the West side "after being ejected from their pickup truck" which crashed "into a light pole." The accident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, "in the 7100 block of US Highway 90 West." According to details from police officers, "a driver was traveling in a Chevrolet Silverado heading eastbound on the Highway 90 access road when it went off the roadway and into a grassy embankment. The pickup truck then crashed into a light pole and the driver was ejected. The truck then landed on top of the driver before it went up in flames. Firefighters arrived and extinguished the fire. The driver died at the scene." At this time, there are no "pending criminal charges," but "the investigation continues." (KSAT San Antonio)
