Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. Earlier this month, former Texas state senator Leticia Van de Putte was struck by a large sports utility vehicle "after she activated a pedestrian light" and walked down a crosswalk in Orlando, Florida while she and her husband were on vacation. According to police, Van de Putte, 67, "was thrown 10 to 15 feet into the air... and suffered numerous fractures and a blow to her head." The driver who hit her stayed with her and "tried to help until an ambulance arrived." Fortunately, she "never lost consciousness" but according to her husband, Pete, "she faces a long recovery." As of last week, she was at University Hospital and according to family, was improving every day. For more on this story please visit: (Subscription: expressnews.com)
  2. Almost two years ago, "The San Antonio River Authority halted work on the $300 million" San Pedro Creek Culture Park project due to "a 2020 archeological find." Workers "unearthed the cornerstone of the post-Civil War-era Saint James African Methodist Episcopal Church" with "the initials AME and the year 1875... among the markings chiseled into the cornerstone" and "researchers believe the church stood on the site from 1871 to 1877." Earlier this year, "work on the creek away from the church site resumed" but it will "be marked with historical designations and interpretive signs" to preserve the past. The project should be completed by August with a grand opening in October. For more information visit: (Texas Public Radio)
