Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:

  1. On Wednesday, Aug. 10, NEISD's Oak Grove Elementary School located at 3250 Nacogdoches "was place in secure status" during their first day of school. The lockdown was due to a nearby incident "where a man pointed what was believed to be a gun at two different people." According to NEISD officials, "a school is placed under secure status when there is criminal activity in the area." For more details visit: (mySA)
  2. On Friday, Aug. 12, San Antonio's Tower of the Americas will hold a kickoff event for a new Build-A-Bear Workshop located inside the tower. Starting at 6 p.m., guests will be able to enjoy "snacks, drinks, movies" and custom-made teddy bears." With each "Build-A-Bear purchase, "customers will receive "two movie tickets" to the venue's "4D theater," where they will also get free popcorn. More details at: (culturemap.com)
  3. Lately Haven for Hope, located at 1 Haven for Hope Way, has been "seeing an influx of individuals seeking shelter," the majority of them being "families and single women." Some of the reasons are due to "inflation, gas prices, and the end of the eviction moratorium." Kim Jefferies, CEO and President of Haven for Hope, said, "We do whatever we can to ensure that there is space for any individual who is seeking shelter in this community. It may not be an ideal space, and it may be a makeshift space until we until we figure out a long-term solution for this growth, but we'll find a way for everybody." This year is the 10-year anniversary of San Antonio's Día de los Muertos festival, and to celebrate, the community is invited to attend "two days of free music, activities, dancing, processions, and more" this fall from October 29-30. Those who are not able to attend can enjoy "a two-hour evening special" of the event on Sunday, Oct. 30, on ABC and KSAT 12 stations. The festival artistic director, Jim Mendiola, said, "San Antonio is fast becoming the capital of Day of the Dead celebrations in the U.S., and Día de los Muertos at Hemisfair is leading the way in that honor."
