🌱 New UTSA San Pedro I + CAM Helping Homeless 'One Life At A Time'

Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:

  1. A new building at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Downtown Campus has been named "San Pedro I." The new venue "will house the UTSA School of Data Science" at "506 Dolorosa St. along San Pedro Creek in downtown San Antonio." According to UTSA officials, the "name recognizes the university's commitment to the site as a historic and future hub of prosperity for the city." Veronica Salazar, UTSA chief financial officer and senior vice president for business affairs, said, "The new San Pedro I building is part of a comprehensive plan to evolve the Downtown Campus into an anchor for San Antonio's downtown development." She added, "Naming the building after the San Pedro Creek represents UTSA's commitment to the significance of this place within the San Antonio community." (UTSA)
  2. Beginning Friday, June 10 at 10 a.m., you can get your tickets through Ticketmaster.com for Nick Swardson's comedy performance on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Aztec Theater, located at 104 N. Saint Marys St. The show will be part of his "Make Joke From Face" tour, which will include stops in 19 cities, including San Antonio. "Swardson is an actor, writer, and producer... best known for his co-starring roles in a series of Adam Sandler movies" and a starring role "as Terry on Reno 911! for six seasons."   3. Those with a sweet tooth will be excited to learn that Portland-based Voodoo Doughnuts is coming to San Antonio at the end of this year! The doughnut shop will be housed at 400 E. Houston St., the current location of Playland Pizza, which is closing at the end of June. "The company is known for their seductive Pepto-Bismol pink boxes chock-full of irreverent and uniquely decadent offerings." Chris Schultz, CEO of Voodoo Doughnuts, said, "We're excited to bring the Voodoo Magic to San Antonio, in the downtown corridor, where so much exciting growth is occurring." (mySA)
  4. A new program in San Antonio "called 'One life at a time' is helping one chronically homeless person at a time." According to Dawn White-Fosdick, president and CEO of Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM) — the nonprofit leading the program — the goal "is to help people who are on the street that are chronic, that are really struggling that may not be able to access help themselves due to mental health issues or substance abuse issues."   5. Despite the hot summer temperatures in San Antonio, there's "something to look forward to outdoors this weekend" in town. On Friday, June 10, Traders Village at 9333 S.W. Loop 410 "will host a variety of fair-like festivities, including a petting zoo, concessions stands and an inflatable slide" during the return of its "beloved 10-acre sunflower field." The cost is "$8.99 for an all-day sunflower wristband," $15.99 for patrons, which includes "a combo wristband" for all-day rides outside of the field; and kids under 2 are free.
