Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:
- A "large fireball" lit up the sky over Texas on Sunday night, putting on "quite a show that was picked up on cameras across East Texas!" A computer model from the American Meteorology Society "showed the fireball entered the atmosphere about 100 miles northeast of San Antonio and flew northwest across the sky until it flamed out near Austin." According to local experts, it may have been due to "space junk that fell from the Earth's orbit" or "a meteorite the size of a small car." If you missed it, check out the video at: (550 KTSA)
- "National Root Beer Float Day" is on Saturday, Aug. 6, and to celebrate, "What's Brewing" Coffee Roasters on 281 and West Rhapsody will be holding a "root beer and pinball" event starting at 1 p.m. that day! For "a $10 entry fee," people can participate in a pinball tournament, and at the same time, "utilize their caffeine intake" and enjoy a root beer float! - A $20,000 reward is being offered for items stolen from Sports Cards Plus, located at 2251 Lockhill Selma Road. The local sports card memorabilia shop in the Lockhill-Village Shopping Center has been at that location for more than 30 years. According to owner Charlie DiPietro the burglary happened after 4 a.m. when the alarm went off, and the robbers were there about 3 minutes, but police didn't show up until 5 minutes after the alarm. If they had been there 2 more minutes, they would have been caught. DiPietro is "working with police to view the 23 cameras set up at the store," which seem to show that there were four male burglars. He said, "I want to put these people in jail, and I want to do it the right." (mySA)
- The body of Christina Lee Powell, reported missing on Wednesday, July 6, was found on Saturday, July 23, just before 7 p.m. According to investigators, "a security guard had noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in the same place for about a week. After walking up to the 2020 Nissan Rogue to investigate, the security guard noticed a foul odor coming from the car. Upon taking a closer look inside, they could see what looked like a dead body in the passenger side of the SUV." The car with Powell's body was "found in the 11700 block of IH-1o W., and an autopsy by the Bexar County Medical Examiner will now "determine the cause of death." (550 KTSA)
- San Antonio's "Muertos Fest" will celebrate "its 10th anniversary this year from Oct. 29-30" at the Hemisfair. Also known as "Día de los Muertos at Hemisfair," the free event will feature "four stages of live music, 50 altars honoring local families and loved ones who have passed on, as well as special events for children, artists and families." Phil Lane from KSAT said, "It will be the first year that the huge 'Día de los Muertos at Hemisfair' will be broadcast to the nation and on KSAT12, KSAT.com and KSAT+. The altars, music and procession have done a tremendous job of making 'Muertos Fest' one of National Geographic's Best Fall Festivals in the U.S. And this year, KSAT12 invites all South Texas to join us for this free event in Hemisfair."
