Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- A San Antonio Starbucks shop located on 410 and Vance Jackson is "the first store in the state to join a nationwide unionization movement after filing a petition to the National Labor Relations Board" on Monday, Feb. 7. Nine baristas from that store, referred to as "partners" by the coffee chain, "sent a letter to company CEO Kevin Johnson explaining their desire to organize and announced they 'are ready to finally be regarded as [a] partner, officially.'" One partner, Gaz Garcia, said " his co-workers filed the petition to create a safer working environment, increase pay for employees and address other needs to operate the store smoothly." Rossann Williams, executive vice president and president, North America, said "the vote outcomes will not change our shared purpose or how we will show up for each other. We will keep listening, we will keep connecting and we will keep being in service of one another because that's what we've always done and what it means to be partner." According to Dr. David MacPherson, E.M. Stevens professor of economics at Trinity University, "when a union is created wages and benefits go up, which impacts labor costs." He said, "I think it's safe to say... you'll be paying more if they win." For more information and to see a news video, visit: (KENS5.com)
- Valentine's Day is not only for lovers, but it's also a day to celebrate love between family and friends. Referred to as "Galentine's" Day, and "popularized in an early episode of the sitcom 'Parks and Recreation,'" the friendly holiday celebrates gals and pals without focusing on "that special someone." - On Thursday, Feb. 17, The Singing Men of South Texas will perform a free concert at First Baptist Church, located at 309 Cottonwood St. in Edna. The group, directed by Larry Danks of Trinity Baptist Church in Kerrville, is made up of music ministers, pastors and associate pastors from South Texas Baptist churches "who share the gospel of Jesus Christ through music."
