SAN ANTONIO (March 8, 2021) – Using the power of grass roots connections, Animal Care Services has launched a new initiative aimed at getting roaming pets back to their families. The ACS Lost & Found Pet Network is a Facebook group whose supporters distribute digital flyers of pets brought into the municipal shelter. Animal Care staff review intake reports and search the kennels for pets who are wearing collars, have had recent grooming or who otherwise appear to be owned. Alerts including the pet’s picture, animal ID and area where they were found are then created for distribution through the group.

Using their respective networks, both on and off-line, the group volunteers have shared close to fifty ACS pets since the project’s inception less than a week ago. A lost German Shepherd Dog named Gypsy was reunited with her family within two days after a post by a Network volunteer. The private Facebook group currently shares pets from San Antonio Animal Care Services, but plans are underway to expand access to individuals seeking their own lost pets. With close to one hundred current members, the ACS Lost & Found Pet Network is always seeking new partners. Residents can become volunteers at: saacs.info/lostfoundnetwork.
