San Antonio: Carver Branch Library To Celebrate 90-Year Anniversary

Carver Branch Library, which opened 90 years ago in a small wooden building during World War I, is one of SAPL's oldest libraries.

SAN ANTONIO- The Carver Branch Library, one of San Antonio Public Library’s (SAPL) oldest locations, is celebrating its 90-year anniversary on Saturday, December 12. SAPL is observing the milestone with online activities and the distribution of commemorative goodie bags.

Carver Branch Library, which opened 90 years ago in a small wooden building during World War I, is one of San Antonio Public Library’s oldest libraries. The present building was built on donated land in 1973 and underwent remodeling in 1994 to become what is the current Carver Branch Library.

Named after African American scientist George Washington Carver, the Carver Branch Library proudly serves San Antonio’s east side community with a collection of over 56,000 items including special collections of African American Studies and Spanish language materials.

SAPL is currently offering Phase 3 COVID-19 services which include: Contact-Free Pickup, Tuesday, noon to 7 p.m. and Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and computer access by appointment Tuesday, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday through Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
