Councilwoman Sandoval’s Statement on State’s Decision to End Mask Mandate, Business Capacity Limits

SAN ANTONIO (March 2, 2021) — Following Governor Abbott’s announcement that he will end the statewide mask mandate and business capacity limits, Councilwoman Ana Sandoval issued the following statements:

“As if one catastrophe wasn’t enough, it seems with today’s announcement that our state leadership is intent on leading the nation in avoidable deaths.”

“Rolling back precautions across the state — before the majority of Texans are vaccinated and at a time when we’re contending with new variants of COVID-19 — recklessly endangers the lives of millions. This direction stands contrary to proven science and puts at risk the efficacy of the vaccine. It is a slap in the face to every frontline worker who continues to risk their lives.”

“Across the state and in our community, Texans are clamoring for their vaccine, often fearful that they will not receive one. State leadership appears tone deaf to their panic and to the scarcity of vaccines. State leadership is more concerned with ending pandemic precautions than it is with ending the pandemic.”

“Wearing a mask and keeping a physical distance are still the best ways to protect ourselves from the spread of the virus, even for those that have received the vaccine. These precautions are why our COVID-19 infection rates are declining. We must remain steadfast in our efforts to end this pandemic.”
