San Antonio Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales Urges The City’s Transportation Team To Prioritize Accident Mitigation Along Culebra Rd.

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Police Department reported two pedestrian fatalities along Culebra Rd. last night. The crash happened at the corner of Culebra and 19th street and is still under investigation.

β€œWe mourn last night's loss of our neighbors’ lives and we owe it to our community to make our streets safer. Almost monthly there is a report of a major collision or a fatality along Culebra,” District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales said during Thursday’s City Council meeting. She went on to urge the Transportation Department to address Culebra Rd. safety issues sooner rather than later.

Remarks were made as the Council approved more than $6 million for sidewalk and mobility improvements associated with the Neighborhood Access and Mobility Program (NAMP) and the Infrastructure Management Program (IMP) across the city.

β€œWe know how to make streets safer. The Vision Zero initiative that I brought to San Antonio outlines methods that have been proven to reduce fatalities.” Gonzales emphasized that the improvements are overdue and must be put in place faster.
