Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:

  1. "Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon... Wine?" On Oct. 7, Kraft Heinz released its 2020 "La Moutarde Vin," which means "the mustard wine" in French. The Napa Valley wine "draws some of its flavor from Dijon mustard" and even has "some mustard seeds in the bottle." The wine has “bright hints of spice and pronounced citrus and floral characteristics, balanced by vibrant acidity.” Although the interesting concoction left some scratching their heads, it proved to be very popular, as it sold out completely in one single day. (San Antonio Current)
  2. Doug Kershaw, legendary Cajun singer and songwriter, is "best known for his fiddle prowess, although he’s proficient on a dizzying 28 instruments." The talented entertainer planned to perform at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, but unfortunately the New Orleans show was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. Despite the cancellation, the 85-year-old musician decided the show must go on, and kept his San Antonio engagement on Monday, Oct. 11 at the Lonesome Rose on 2114 N. St. Mary’s St. Kershaw loves to perform and says "It’s my life. I just love it... Getting out on the road with the fans and people, that’s my life, you know? I’m not going to quit. Never." (San Antonio Current)
  3. "You should know it's that time of year, when the witches and ghosts are here," but do you know about San Antonio's scary stories? One of them is the "haunting Hot Wells Ruins" where paranormal activities have been said to occur, including the apparition of a strange character named "Paranormal Paul." Another one is of the Menger Hotel ghosts, including the ghost of "President Teddy Roosevelt who is said to have spent some time in the bar" and of former chambermaid, Sallie White, "who was biracial and embroiled in an abusive relationship," and was "ultimately shot and killed by her husband outside of the hotel." Read about these and about other and other scary tales, "but don't you fear, don't you run away," or the ghosts might get you! (Laredo Morning Times)
  4. Marcus Baskerville, San Antonio brewer and co-creator of the Black is Beautiful initiative, is opening a brewery and incubator in Charlotte, North Carolina, along with business partner, Mike Holt. Besides the Charlotte facility set to open April 2022, they're also co-founders of San Antonio's Weathered Souls, which was voted “The Best Craft Brewery in the Country” by Hop Culture Magazine. The Harriet Baskerville Incubation program in North Carolina "aims to give traditionally underrepresented people a start along the road to a career in craft brewing," and pays homage to Baskerville's grandmother. She was a brewer during prohibition and had to stop "because someone fell off her roof and she didn’t want to go to jail," but Baskerville is "glad to pick up where she left off." (San Antonio Current)
  5. Downtown San Antonio will become a spooky town this weekend, as the Burton Ball is returning to its usual haunts on Saturday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 10. The traditional event celebrates movie maker Tim Burton and features his films such as "Beetlejuice," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," and "Alice in Wonderland." "Each year, San Antonians go all out on costumes and show up for photo opportunities and spooky shopping you can't find anywhere else." Saturday's event is from 6 p.m.-1 a.m., but for all ages until 11 p.m. On Sunday, all ages can enjoy all day, from noon to 6 p.m. As a COVID-19 precaution, all guests will be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination. Happy Halloween and have a "boo-tiful and "spook-tacular" time! (mySanAntonio.com)
