San Antonio: District 4 Provides Backpacks And Supplies To Schools At Northside ISD, Southwest ISD, South San Antonio ISD And Centromed
"Remote learning may be the 'norm' for our students so we hope we can provide them with the tools they need to be successful in school."
September 9, 2020
SAN ANTONIO– In an effort to follow the safety and health guidelines set forth by Metro Health and our local leaders, the annual District 4 Back-to-School Fair did not take place in the traditional way. After hosting three events last year in partnership with Northside Independent School District, Southwest Independent School District, and CentroMed, Councilwoman Adriana Rocha Garcia opted to provide 1,600 backpacks and school supplies directly to CentroMed and schools in the three public school districts serving District 4 families.
On August 7, 2020, staff from CentroMed picked up 800 backpacks full of school supplies to be distributed directly to students and families during their visits for well-child, immunizations, or sports physical appointments in August. Last year, District 4 co-hosted a carnival-themed Back-to-School Health Fair at the CentroMed Berto Guerra Jr. Clinic and more than 1,000 backpacks were distributed.
As teachers and staff prepared for the start of the school year, District 4 staff provided 500 backpacks and supplies to schools at Northside ISD and Southwest ISD. Many families may not have the means to purchase school supplies due to financial constraints so teachers and counselors will be able to provide these resources to students in need. Today, Armstrong Elementary School Principal Philip De la Pena and staff from South San Antonio ISD picked up 300 backpacks and school supplies for students from the District 4 field office.
“Although we may not have been able to host our back-to-school events this year, I am grateful for our school and community partners who are just as committed to providing resources and support to our students and families during the school year”, stated Councilwoman Rocha Garcia, “Remote learning may be the ‘norm’ for our students so we hope we can provide them with the tools they need to be successful in school.”
