San Antonio: Transparent Rate Review Process Expected Move For 21st Century Public Utility

SAN ANTONIO (December 16, 2020) — On Monday, December 14, CPS Energy’s Board of Trustees approved the creation of a Rate Advisory Committee. Councilwoman Sandoval issued the following statements:

“Members of the public continue to expect greater transparency and accountability from public agencies. This is as true in San Antonio as anywhere in the U.S., and CPS Energy is not immune from these expectations.”

“Yesterday’s vote and the past months of work on this proposal by CPS Energy staff and Trustees represent a welcome and needed shift in the way major decisions have been made in San Antonio for decades.”

Over the past year and a half, under the steady leadership of Chair John Steen and CEO Paula Gold Williams, CPS Energy has implemented a series of transparency measures, including: live streaming of board meetings, providing background information on agenda items, posting the agenda and minutes of the Citizens Advisory Committee meetings, etc.

“I would like to thank the Mayor for championing these efforts on the CPS Energy Board and the environmental stakeholders for their years of work advocating for these improvements. I look forward to Trustee Janie Gonzalez’s role in advancing transparency and engagement.”

Councilwoman Sandoval advocates for meaningful public participation and in 2018 led the City’s adoption of public participation principles.
