Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. San Pedro I building, located at 506 Dolorosa St., "is the first of several planned for UTSA's downtown expansion." The 167,000-square-foot, six-story structure, which cost $91.8 million to build, "sits along San Pedro Creek east of UTSA's Downtown Campus, anchoring UTSA to San Antonio's downtown core." It "will house the new School of Data Science" and should open "by January 2023." For more details please visit: (UTSA)
  2. On Monday, Aug. 29, a third Fish City Grill seafood restaurant will be opening in San Antonio, at "The Shops at South Rim." Currently they're looking for "servers, bartenders, hosts, line cooks, prep cooks, dishwashers and bussers." In-person applications will be taken Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at 5311 N. Loop 1604 West, or online here. More at: (FOX 29)
  3. American Idol contestant Savannah Votion, a "Southside ISD alumni" who was also "born and raised" on the south side of San Antonio, "will be premiering her new music video to her single 'Exclusiva' this month at Brooster's Backyard Icehouse." Also featured in the single is actor Ricky Versetti from "Queen of the South," whose music style ranges "from hip hop and R&B to Spanish hip hop and reggaetón." In addition, he "has written songs and melodies for different artists in various genres" and "just released the single 'California Dreams' that features Latin Grammy nominee Baby Bash." For more details visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
  4. The man fatally shot inside an LA Fitness "off 410 and Blanco" has been identified. His name was Brandon Marquis Broadnax, and he would have celebrated his 35th birthday on Wednesday, Aug. 10. According to his sister, Kim, "she doesn't know why he was targeted" as "he didn't know the suspect," Jessie Marquis MacWilliams, who is "accused of pulling the trigger" and is now in jail. She said, "My brother is not a violent person. He is the peacemaker of the family. He just worked, went to church. There is no reason for my brother to have been taken from us." The case is still under investigation and "as of Wednesday night, the medical examiner has not positively identified Broadnax." Once that happens, his family will be able to "proceed with his funeral." More on this case at: (KENS5.com)
  5. Classes haven't even started yet, but already, after school programs in San Antonio area school districts are filling up. According to Charlie Gallardo, South San ISD director of guidance and counseling, "They're grateful for community partners who help provide emotional and academic support to students and families before and after school." However, Allyce Ramon with SA Youth said, "We're facing a staffing shortage. There's a waiting list of the after-school programs. If they could hire 15 to 20 more staff, they would be able to get those on the waiting list in." Another staff shortage is at "the YMCA after-school programs," where employee Shannon Gowen said, "they are about 50 staff members short this year." According to her, "filling those positions could open up about 300 spots for kids." They suggest that "if you have not signed up for an after-school program for your child, get on a list now. If you don't know what programs are available, reach out to your child's campus to learn more." (KSAT San Antonio)
