The second radio station in San Antonio, WCAR, begins broadcasting from 324 N. Navarro St. It is later renamed KTSA (which stands for Kum To San Antonio). (License date 5/9/22)

1960
Ground is broken for the $4,000,000 175-bed addition to the Baptist Memorial Hospital downtown with a 20-foot shovel manned by 20 people representing all hospital departments.
1985
The Space Shuttle Challenger, atop a Boeing 747, takes off from Kelly AFB at 6 a.m. after a brief refueling stop on the way from Edwards AFB, California to Cape Canaveral. For the first time since shuttle flights began landing in San Antonio, the public was not allowed on base to view the arrival nor departure due to a new NASA policy.
