Lupe Wong will be the first Mexican-Chinese female pitcher of the Seattle Mariners when she grows up. But first, she’ll have to square dance her way to an A in her 7th grade P.E. class. Lupe is not sure that she can square dance; she finds the prospect mortifying. To motivate Lupe, her uncle Hector promises to introduce her to professional baseball player Fu Lu who is “Chinacan” like her. As if things were not bad enough, Lupe has had a rough year. Her family is adjusting to a monumental loss. The dynamics that Lupe has with her friends shifts all the time. Lupe, desperate to avoid square dancing, comes up with different ways to derail the class. Ultimately, readers will see Lupe reflect on her priorities and relationships with humor and thought. Readers will be rooting for her to do-si-do to her dreams. Check out Lupe Wong Won't Dance by Donna Barba Higuera, you will not regret it!
