1917
Beginning today, traffic policemen stationed on all important street crossings in the downtown district will stop directing traffic with their hands and arms. Instead the new signal devices will be in operation.

1964
Fall classes begin at Trinity University. One of the incoming freshmen is Jacqueline Ellen Smith, of Houston (right), who will later change her name to Jaclyn and find fame as one of Charlie’s Angels.

1986
North Star Mall officials unveiled the partially completed new wing that will feature 45 retail stores including Pat Magee’s, Florsheim Shoes, Foot Locker, Gadzooks, Lane Bryant, and Marshall Field’s department store. The addition will be completed on Oct. 31 and will eventually bring the square footage of North Star Mall to 1.2 million square feet.
