Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:
- Teacher Appreciation Week is May 1-6 and to celebrate, Hat Creek Burger Co., located at 7617 N. Loop 1604 East, will be giving one free burger or sandwich per teacher or school staff employee that dines in the restaurant. To receive the free offer, each school employee must present their school ID. The celebratory event takes place from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, and school employees "will have their choice of specialty burgers and sandwiches, including the chain's popular Southwest Burger, featuring pepper jack cheese, jalapeños, grilled onions and Yellowbird Serrano Sauce." - As part of Walmart's Wellness Day on Saturday, April 23, Walmart pharmacies will be offering "free health screenings" including "free glucose, cholesterol, BMI, blood pressure screenings and COVID-19 vaccines." In addition, "immunizations like shingles, pneumonia, tetanus, hepatitis, HPV and flu" will be available at low costs. The event will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Walmart's Wellness Day "is held four times a year to encourage customers to not only get healthy but stay healthy," and takes place "at more than 500 Walmart pharmacies in Texas and thousands more across the country." - Earth Day is today, April 22 and to commemorate that day, H-E-B is giving away "free custom-designed reusable bags" to customers at "H-E-B, Mi Tienda, Central Market and Joe V's Smart Shop stores." Starting at 1 p.m., each customer will receive one free bag, and each additional bag will cost $1.50. "This year's bag design, For the Love of Texas, was created by San Antonio artist Julia Rojas. It features several native plants and animals." Besides the bag giveaway, stores will also host "Environmental Educational Scavenger Hunts to show children how they can protect the environment and practice sustainability." There will also be various "in-store events to commemorate Earth Day with their communities." Customers can also donate $1, $3 or $5 when they check out online or in-store "to benefit EarthShare of Texas, a nonprofit that supports more than 70 conservation groups." In addition, the grocery chain is holding a recycling contest for "150 schools across the state" to see "which school can collect the most plastic bags," and the "winners will be announced in May." - Two new eateries recently opened in north central San Antonio, and they are Sofia's Pizzeria located at 903 E. Bitters Road, where Miss Ellie's Pizza was located before it "permanently closed earlier this year after being in business since 1998,"and Panfila Cantina in The Shops at Fossil Creek retail center at 22250 Bulverde Road, Ste. 114. Sofia's Pizzeria "specializes in New York-style pizzas, with menu items including the Margherita, Mucha Meatsa, Buffalo Chicken, Hawaiian and Greek."
