Welcome to the San Antonio Daily! Here's your go-to for the most important things going on in the community.
Happy Saturday, neighbors! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.
First, today's weather:
A shower and t-storm; humid. High: 84 Low: 64.
Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:
- Ever since he was a kid, Joseph Garcia has loved decorating for Halloween. It's something he and his mom did together, and now he enjoys doing it with his two daughters, ages 4 and 6. He and his girls start decorating their Alamo Ranch home in mid-September with skeletons, pumpkin patches and hay bales, but this year he wanted to add something new to the decor. He really wanted to get a 12-foot skeleton with "LED eyes that light up to watch passersby" that came out in 2020 at Home Depot, but they were always sold out. After checking every 2 weeks at Home Depot and even joining "a 12-foot skeleton Facebook group to help increase his odds of snagging the sought-after decorations," he finally got lucky! In August he not only found the original skeleton, but he also found the newest addition, "a 12-foot skeleton with a pumpkin head and a torso that lights up" named the Inferno Pumpkin. The neighbors enjoy taking their pictures with the skeletons, and Garcia and his girls love getting into the spirit of Halloween! (mySanAntonio.com)
- The coronavirus pandemic affected many things last year, including the beloved Halloween celebration, but this year it's back and there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate in a safe way. This year kids can go trunk-or-treating, where they go from car to car instead of house to house, to ask for candy. There will also be pumpkin patches and Halloween festivals, and some of them will require masks when walking around the booths for COVID-19 safety reasons. Little ghouls and goblins are sure to have a sweet time at either of these trick-or-treating events in town! For a list of events, including dates and times, visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
- Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, two San Antonio bars opened in 2020, and will be celebrating 1-year anniversaries. Jaimes Place, owned by Jaime Macias, opened last year "to serve "as a 'gateway' business to the Westside community, and inspire positive, conscious growth in the 78207" area. On Saturday, Oct. 9, locals are invited to celebrate with cold brews and music "from the George Rivas Band, The Muñoz Brothers Band, and Status'fied 17." Tony's Siesta planned to celebrate on Saturday, Oct. 16. Unfortunately a photo posted on their building of Tony Lopez, the former owner of the bar when it was Tony's Bar, was marred by graffiti. As a sign of respect to Lopez, who turned 81 last Friday and still frequents the bar, the anniversary celebration has been put on hold. They're not going to let that ruin the party! The party will still go on, and but details will be coming up soon. (mySA)
- Take your friends for a Spooky Cinema night with Casper the Friendly Ghost at Spooky Cinema at Main Plaza! This free film series, presented by Main Plaza Conservancy and Blue Star Ice House, can be seen every Thursday in October starting at around 7:30 p.m. Yummy treats and drinks will be available for purchase. Enjoy the movie and have a 'view'-tiful time! (San Antonio Current)
- If you're not sure of where to eat this weekend or you just don't want to cook, why won't you visit the new Sichuanese cuisine restaurant in town? Dashi Sichuan Kitchen + Bar, located at 2895 Thousand Oaks Dr., opened less than 2 months ago. It serves traditional dishes like green beans and spicy, savory shrimp, as well as other "innovative new plates on the the menu." Kristina Zhao, a partner at Dashi Sichuan Kitchen & Bar, said, "we wanted to get more in depth with the full culinary repertoire of Sichuan cuisine and now we have the facility and the kitchen space to execute those items." Plan to dine this weekend at Dashi Sichuan Kitchen + Bar and have a yummy good time! (WOAI)
